Freddie Mercury

For whatever reason, this morning I ended up in a Freddie Mercury shaped rabbit hole. I’ve been listening to Queen songs all morning, watching him in interviews, and checking out his wiki.

I don’t think I ever really appreciated how great of a vocalist Freddie Mercury is. Like, his voice is amazing. And Queen has so many hits. Knowing this makes me wonder why everyone’s favorite de facto rock band is The Beatles. John and Paul are great but Freddie alone is just amazing.

I used to be a big fan of Mika, whom I now realize sounds really similar to Freddie Mercury and was probably heavily influenced by him. Anyway, I just wanted to share this rediscovery. Now I’m going to continue to listen to Queen albums on Apple Music and Spotify.

P.S. There’s this beautiful thing that distinguishes a Freddie Mercury song from songs written by the other Queen members. I don’t know any of the technical musical terms to describe it but I know it involves harmonies, key changes, and rhythm shifts. Anyway, it’s beautiful. Here’s the most famous example of it, which is also most people’s (including me) first introduction to Queen:
