In light of all this Mike Brown/Ferguson stuff, I’ve had to deal with a lot of hard things. People saying hateful things, people ignoring the events all together, and people finding ways to shift the conversation. Still, the hardest thing for me to deal with was realizing that everyone is broken.
I responded to a FB post from my mentor and friend in which she stated that the issues in the Mike Brown case weren’t about race but simply injustice. I don’t write about her to highlight how “ill-informed” I think she is (I don’t believe she is) but instead to highlight how differently people experience the world. My experiences are mine alone, and I can’t expect all people to readily acknowledge them or agree with them. That breaks my heart but it also reminds me how important it is to have a dialogue about issues like this.
